Grand Central Station

On the way back from an interview at a temp agency, I passed by this bakery in grand central station. To try to keep from killing myself I bought a cookie to eat later that day. This place had no sign or name.

I got the cookie home and smelled it. It smelled like french fries. Why?

I wrapped it up and 2 nights later gave it a shot. It's very clean looking, unlike the last cookie. Looks very perfect and polite.

The vanilla side was GREAT! Really unique tasting. I don't think any cookie I've reviewed tasted like this. I'm going crazy because it was the kind of vanilla that tasted REALLY familiar, and I can't quite place how. It had a very candy sweetness to it. I RECOMMEND THIS COOKIE solely for the vanilla side. And if you buy this cookie, please e-mail me and tell me what this taste reminds you of, cause I'm slapping myself silly trying to place the this familiar feeling

.

The chocolate side was typical of the kind of cookies I've come into contact with all month. Very very rich deep chocolatey, very intense, like a milkshake. In fact, for this cookie I preferred the vanilla side whole heartedly. Chocolate? YAAAAAAAWN.

The cake also had a very good flavor, I would eat it alone without icing. It was not too fat and it wasn't too tough, though I would not call it moist or soft either. But again, it wasn't exactly fresh by the time I ate it.

Maybe you can tell my heart isn't in this review. It's because my sister sent me a box from australia that contained a NEW kind of Kit Kat... (drum roll) COOKIE DOUGH KIT KAT. WHAT?!?!?!

After stuffing my tummy with the cookie-so-yummy, I opened the giant sized Kit Kat and had to try it. It was good, but the caramel inside seemed to overpower any cookie dough there may have been. If it didn't say so on the package, I never would have guessed there was cookie dough.

After that I had some pretzels to wash it all down!

Wow if you line up all the photos of me you can watch my hair growing!

Cheyenne's Diner on 9th avenue and 33rd street

From forgotten-ny.com -

This classic round the clock diner serves both weary travelers arriving from nearby Penn Station, but also postal workers from the James Farley post office complex across 9th Avenue. The facility is still expected to be partially converted into a new Penn Station sometime this decade.

A western motif is also apparent in the menu... the Cheyenne serves steer-burgers.
The burger is the cynosure of any diner, and like Wimpy I eat a LOT of them (but unlike Wimpy, I pay right away). Excellent burgers here, about a half pound of meat. The Mohegan, my burger of choice, comes slathered in onions and bacon and barb-b-cue sauce and you wish the experience could never end.

-------

Sounds lovely! I did not actually eat here however (I have before), but only stopped in on an extremely rainy night to grab a cookie before heading into my car. Here's the picture I took:

Now since this was the last remaining cookie in a big empty tray, and it was past 1 am, perhaps it was not as fresh as it could be. I tried to keep that in mind when rev-eating it (reviewing/eating.)

The bag was rained upon as I threw it in my car and drove home. I took it out and noticed the interesting pattern of the icing:

(P.S. I HATE HOW BLOGGER UNDOES YOUR FONT CHOICE AFTER EVERY DAMN LINE. I HATE YOU BLOGGER.)

Anyway, wow, look at that icing! I bit of vanilla splintering into the chocolate side. Not to mention the uneven shape and vanilla kind of draping over the side of the cookie.

The unfortunate thing is while the icing LOOKS all smooth and soft, it was pretty hard. I've noticed in this blog that the cookies always do seem to look better than they end up tasting.
The cake had an almost burnt quality to it. Check it out along the edges, ladies.

The vanilla side was almost tasteless - just a big mass of cookie cake. Like the last diner cookie I tried, this tasted a lot like those free cookies diners sometimes have near the cash register.

The chocolate side was very good, like a chocolate milkshake. Unlike many other cookies, the chocolate and vanilla sides were completely equal in terms of chewyness or hardness. It was somewhere in the middle. Not rock-like icing but not soft or fresh (again, it was 1 am, so I can forgive this.)

I'm almost embarrassed to say this, but I had been forgetting this whole time to try a few bites of BOTH the vanilla and chocolate. I have to say, this cookie tasted MUCH better this way. The chocolate wasn't too intense and the vanilla stood out more.

All in all it was VERY THICK. Just look.

This would be good if it was kind of spongy and soft, but it was very tough and chewy. What the forgotten-ny write up said about Cheyenne's giant burgers did NOT only apply to the meat...

Maybe I have this ideal cookie in my mind that just doesn't exist. Maybe it goes against the entire nature of a black and white cookie?

I say what these cookies SHOULD be, but maybe they just ARE what they ARE?

I'm going to go crazy.

Here's my reaction to the cookies:

Hey this is a pretty darn good picture of me. I hate how I look but these cookie reaction photos always come out pretty well. Maybe eating a cookie just brings out this glowing confidence that can only be captured in those few moments?

Patisserie Croissants in Times Square

7th avenue and 44th street. A small, incredibly overpriced bakery in Times Square. I was being dropped off from a job (holding a boom mic over Charlie Murphy's head!) and saw a big pile of Black and White Cookies in the window. Well, how could I not...?

It was $3.25. WOW! Expensive. Really crazy. It should be only around $2. Yeah. O.K. Control anger. O.K.

So I brought it home and sat on it (not literally) for a day, and tonight took it out of it's bag.
..

to find this:

AUGH! Maybe I DID sit on it. Cracks had form and the cookie was falling apart inside it's plastic wrap. It looks like the Phantom of the Opera.

I gently, GENTLY, unwrapped the plastic and placed it down on a plate.

AH BUP BUP!! BUUP!!! CAREFULLY!! BUP...BUP!!!

...And it all fell apart into a thousand pieces. Now it looks like Steve Buscemi from "Fargo." "I GOT FUGGIN SHOT..IN THE FASHE!!"

Oh well, on with the show.

I took a bite of the vanilla side.

Nothing. All I taste is big fat cake.

I took a bite of the chocolate side.

BOOM. Huge chocolate taste. Very disproportionate to the vanilla side. It tasted like really strong Hershey's Chocolate milk, when you put too much syrup in the glass. It was very good. But maybe too strong. Still too much thick cake though.

Note: The icing was kind of rubbery and I was able to actually peel it off. Observe.

I ended up not being able to finish the cookie. Maybe the fact that it broke apart took the fun out of chomping out of it. Or maybe the mission of eating so many black and white cookies is destroying me. This is the 2nd one in a row I couldn't finish.

This is my mouth. It's so tired.

Sorry about that.

POP Diner Black and White Cookie

Me and my friend Dave went to a diner on Queens blvd, called POP. This is POP:

http://www.popdiner.com/about.htm

That's me on the left.

Anyway, POP isn't a GREAT diner, but it's Halloween color scheme and forced sense of fun gives me unexplainable intense urges to drive there during the dead of night.

Dave had a giant omelette and I had a piece of apple pie, that was surprisingly giant. HUGE. It was like 20 apples. Except unhealthy. And with whip cream, which I spread around the crust like frosting. And I had a "extra thick chocolate milk shake." It was basically a giant glass f
ull of chocolate ice cream. Did I mention when I got home I had a splitting headache, and then started feeling nauseous right before bed?

As we were leaving, I saw a bunch of black and white cookies. Dave convinced me (it wasn't difficult) to buy one for this old blog. As I grabbed it out of the basket, I noticed HOLY CRAP! It's HUGE! Everything in this place is huge! It also looked REALLY good. Huge and mishapen and homemade. Mmmm.

So the next night I prepared myself the meal. Here is the weird, misshapen cookie.

Holy crap!!! Put on your 3D Glasses people, because we're going to take a journey across the rocky caverns and strangely textured terrain of this monster cookie.

Lunar landing! We have reached surface! There appears to be stretched out dents in the land, possibly from plastic wrap tightening over the icing. Let us explore further!

We have climbed over to the chocolate side. Bumpy rocky protrusions are making their way to the surface, along with rolling hills and a caved in border, possibly the result of an ancient earthquake or continental dividing. MAGNIFICATION X100000...

Is there a face in that Mars rock?

It appears some chocolate side has been melding with the vanilla. So much that it pops out a bit towards the center of the planet's surface, and the brown crust can even be seen a full inch UNDER the vanilla when looked at closer:

A hidden valley of chocolate under the vanilla! For miles and miles!

OK enough of this:

Bit vanilla (as you can see.) INTENSELY HUGE lemon taste from the cake. HUGE. Vanilla? No. All I can taste is the cake.

Bit the chocolate.

(P.S. Look how HUGE this cookie is in relation to the plate...)

Didn't taste it. Just the cake. A hint of chocolate. But it mostly tastes like a cakey cookie you'd get at a diner.

Tried to keep eating it.

Blergh. It's getting really hard to finish this thing. Its like eating 10 pancakes. All I taste is cake, and the vanilla side ESPECIALLY is becoming increasingly unpleasant to choke down.

Eating it has ceased to be fun.

SO CLOSE....

Finally it was over. Though normally my plate is wiped clean, I just couldn't bear to finish the remaining crumbs. Even looking at them made me sick.

Don't get me wrong. The cookie was good. I mean...every black and white cookie tastes GOOD (except Fernando's....) But some are just...not THAT good. And make you sick halfway through.

KING RICHARD Black and White

BEHOLD. KING RICHARD DOTH APPROACHETH.

Noble Jordan the 1st, in misrememberance of his camera's batteries, must etch with weary hands the telltale story of King Richard the Cookie, of Mt. Vernon, New Yorketh. King Richard had cake of darkest brown, unusual for a cookie of his ilk!

"And what a gray day" proclaimed his servant, Lorelee, "I would weep!"

"A fool sees a gray day," smirked the King. "In my hearts eye, the day is Black and White!"

The hand of God smashes down. Bitten is King's vanilla side.

Ouch! Teeth surprised at rock hard bite! Vanilla barely there, under rusty dirty taste of cake that's old. Sugary flavor, unmemorable. Strange cake taste!

Eh!

Darkness arrives, and gobbled aside!

Rubbery texture, like biting toy of dog!
Chocolate tastes good, but not very strong!
The cake on it's own is filled with delight
The flavors on top are all too slight!

"I will not be bitten," yells King Richard, "by the cursed likes of thee!
To toil and rule, under a golden red sky,
Lambs at my feet, crown on my crown,
No God bites without consequence,
No man is bitten without rage!"

As final bites commence, shining angels descend.
The King is King of the Underworld now,
as his final words spelled out by falling trees
his ghost decrees,

"My cake was brown
My vanilla was hard.
My chocolate was rubbery,
My flesh has been marred.

Oh, the foul, sickly life of a man.
He speaks and no one hears,
He cries and children laugh,
Under a fool's moon, and a howling sky,
I am only too glad to die."

Serpe's Bakery, Elsmere, Delaware

My friend Daniel:

...went to Delaware, and brought me back a surprise:

That's his label that he provided. He knows how this blog WORKS!

Serpe's eh?? Elsmere, eh??? Delaware, eh????

Let's see how Delaware does a Black and White Cookie.

I took out the cookie and it was FLAT. The opposite of the cookie I had last night (didn't even give myself time to digest...maybe the 2 cookies are making friends in my stomach.) It was
like a giant sized novelty coin. It was like a small Frisbee. Like a cartoon character after being smashed with a mallet.

The vanilla side -- Woooooow. REALLY good!! Very...DIFFERENT. Unique. Original. A vanilla I haven't tasted before. Very milky and sweet, like ice cream.

Chocolate: POW. Huge taste that punched me in the mouth. For such a flat cookie, it packed a lot of personality. The chocolate also had a strange transformation in it's aftertaste, getting into kind of a muddy dark chocolate flavor that slowly fades out in your mouth.

Looks delicious, doesn't it?

I can't even recall what the cake part was like, as the two flavors completely overpowered it. Maybe this is as it should be?

The icing was kind of hard. Probably cause the cookie had to travel from Delaware, then I waited a few days to eat it. But it will still edible. One of the cookies on this blog had icing as hard as a rock.

I finished the cookies and poured myself a glass of milk. Wow...look how one gl
ass drained the new milk that was bought:

WHAT A GREAT BLOG THIS IS!!!! :)))

La Dolce Italia Bakery

So even though a friend of mine bought me a black and white cookie today (next post), my mom came home with a box of freshly made black and white cookies from La Dolce Italia Bakery in Forest Hills, NY (home of Peter Parker.)

Look at that seductive gaze

I didn't want them to go bad, and I ALSO didn't want my family to eat them all, so I wrapped one up and brought it upstairs to hide in my room until the coast was clear.

no one will hurt you, little cookie

At 2:00 AM I went downstairs to check this shit OUT. I unwrapped the plastic and WOOOOOH...A STRONG STRONG and delicious smell blew out of the bag. Wow. It didn't smell like the usual B&W...It smelled like the kind of sugar cookies you'd buy in one of those metal heart shaped tins.

The cookie was SOFT. And spongey. Look at it! It has moon-like craters. I was excited beyond belief. Even more beyond.

it's bigger than the entenmann's one, that's for sure

I took a bite of the vanilla side. Ever notice I always do vanilla side first? Here's why:

The chocolate is usually more flavorful and powerful in taste. My concern is that by tasting th
e chocolate first, my interpretation of the vanilla will be clouded and distorted by the chocolate still on my taste buds. Vanilla tends to evaporate within the mouth easier.

Hmmm. I didn't even taste vanilla. At all. All I tasted was the cake. VERY VERY good, but the cake and it's lemony spongyness completely overpowered the vanilla. I went in for a 2nd try, this time with the vanilla side DOWN on my tongue...

Nothing. I CAN'T TASTE THE VANILLA! Only cake. Oh well, I give up.

Next I bit the...how you say, chocolate. Woooo, very flavorful and very, well, chocolatey. Nothing outstandingly unique...while it was above average, in general it was a familiar B&W chocolate taste.

As the cookie was half eaten, I looked at the spongey cake from a different angle.

why the frown?

Wow!! Really soft and light and fluffy.

The cookie was very good, very LARGE, and made me very full. I was stunned.

me, and girlfriend (not pictured)

Until next time...
